Imagery

Use of imagery is a key part of our visual identity.

Our Brand Guidelines suggest: 'Our use of photography should be inspirational and aspirational, engaging and exciting. We should avoid the obvious and clichéd. Cropping a photograph well can have a dramatic effect on its impact, drawing the viewer’s eye and excluding visual clutter. Photographs should be of the highest possible quality. We should never use pictures which look slightly out of focus or dull.'

Further Image Guidance

As outlined in our brand guidelines, we ask Societies to avoid overly staged, generic, or impersonal stock or clip art imagery as visual materials in Society communications and promotional content. This principle also extends to AI-generated images.

While we recognise the increasing accessibility and appeal of AI tools, their use raises concerns around copyright, authorship, and the sourcing of training data. Many AI-generated images are created using material derived from artists’ work without consent, attribution, or compensation. The Arts Society champions creativity, originality, and artistic practice, so we believe it is important to take a responsible position on this issue.

We also recognise the growing concern within the creative community that AI-generated imagery may undermine artists and devalue creative skill. For this reason, we do not support the use of AI-generated images as a substitute for original artistic work in any official materials.

We therefore kindly ask that Societies avoid using AI-generated imagery across all communications, including social media, posters, and digital content. Instead, we strongly encourage the use of original photography, commissioned or member-created artwork, good quality licensable or Public Domain imagery, and approved brand assets.
